North Carolina’s “Tar Heels” nickname dates back to the state’s early reputation as a great producer of tar and turpentine for naval purposes. The state’s abundant pine forests proved to be a great natural resource, and many of North Carolina’s citizens found work in distilling sap and burning pine boughs.
